Workers delighted with two public holidays, not business owners

The Government has declared two public holidays to commemorate Samoa’s 56th Independence Day at the end of the week. The holidays are Friday, 1 June 2018 and Monday 4 June 2018. While workers are delighted, the private sector is not happy. What do you think? Was it necessary to extend the public holidays to Monday or would it have been sufficient to celebrate on Friday and Saturday? Adel Fruean asked in today’s Street Talk and this is what people said:

Papalii Muliau Isa, 69 Sogi, Moata’a

I completely support the Government’s decision. As a small business owner, I like the idea due to the fact that some of us really need to rest from our daily work schedules. I thank the government for giving us two days as a holiday to gather enough strength to start yet another week of work. I am also looking forward to watching the entertainment for our Independence.

Viane Leiluaulugia, 54, Vaiusu

I completely agree with having two days as a public holiday. The reason why is because I feel that the government wants to give the people more time in celebrating the Independence of our country. From a business owner’s point of view, it would give my workers time to have a break and relax. I am excited to witness our country commemorate its freedom.

Havira Masoe, 56, Papauta

I really agree with the government’s judgement to impose two days of public holiday in Samoa. It is a must to rest during independence so we can honour how our ancestors’ fought for freedom. It is also a good opportunity to spend time with families and the chance to do some chores.

Daniel Mose, 25, Fasito’o

I don’t run a business so I agree with the government’s decision. We are obligated to have a certain commitment in the remembrance of our people’s fight for independence. Our people should honour their sacrifice. For me as a worker, it is a good chance to have a break from work in order to have enough strength for another week at work.

Josie Mansfield Toga, 54, Vaipuna

I disagree with the government’s decision to have two days of holiday. I believe that it greatly affects us small businesses. I thought that it was just Friday but I don’t know why there are two days, when clearly there is a long weekend which will serve as enough time for rest. I think it should be just one day from a business owner’s perspective.
