Keep our country clean

The environment we live in reflects who we are to the outside world.

With such a philosophy, 69-year-old father and grandfather, Sagapolutele Talosaga has urged members of the public to protect the environment.

He was spotted by the Village Voice yesterday while working with members of his family to clean their land at Si’upapa, Saleapaga.

“There’s a famous saying that a clean home is a happy home, and that’s what this clean-up is all about, it’s not just to clean, but for our family to feel happiness in a clean and healthy environment,” he said.

“Because, an unclean environment would lead to diseases and many other problems...and that’s dangerous!

“But if we keep our environment clean and green we can reduce pollution, get fresh air, live peaceful lives without any problems.”

Sapapolutele has been living in the area for years until they moved up hill after the tsunami in 2009.

“So even though we left here, but this is our land, this is where we’ve all grown up. We are responsible to make it nice and neat, especially the road frontage where many tourists and visitors pass by daily.”

He stresses that it is vital to preserve the environment for future generations.

“Personally, it’s so sad to see many of our people dump rubbish anywhere, at any time.” he said.

“Most of the time people throw litter and plastics on the footpaths and roads instead of throwing it into rubbish bins.

“As a father it’s all about common sense, because no matter how many other people clean up the environment and if not everyone puts in an effort, then it’s a waste of time.”

He said Village Councils should play a more active role in keeping the country clean.

“They oversee everything and they should do their best to maintain the beauty of their villages.

“If we don’t keep our environment clean there would be many consequences faced by our people and our children in the future.”
