If there is one thing that drives Masi Lava’s family, it is hard work to try and make ends meets.

Aged 37 from the village of Vaitele-Fou, he says he works for the benefit of his family especially his elderly mother.

“I know everyone is doing the same. Nowadays families are our very first priority and we are not going anywhere if we don’t work to the best of our abilities to earn money.

“I help my brother to support our elderly mother in anyway we can.

“We both work here at the Returnees Trust Charity, maintaining the land and constantly weeding and watching the compound.

Masi says he has spent more than 15 years working and he wouldn’t trade that time for the world.

“This has been my life for a very long time.

“I have been working for different companies for about 15 years now.

“Throughout these years, it never had been easy to work at different jobs and moving from one job to another so that I earn a bit more cash for what we need.

“My job is a good reliable way of making money for our family and especially our elderly mother at home.

“My brother and I are the only breadwinners of our family and this is why I changed from job to job to earn a little more money.

“With what we earn now it is enough for our basic needs only but when it comes to family fa’alavelave and other stuff, we ring our families s to help us out.”

Mr Lava is single man and he does not want to have a family of his own.

“I don’t want to have a wife or kids, because I don’t want to be pressured to do more aside from taking care of my mother.

“This is our family’s way of dealing with the rising cost of living and I don’t want to be stressed doing more when I have kids and a wife.”

With the 15 years of caring for his family, Masi said that he has picked up some lifelong skills along the way.

“Everything we do teaches us about life. Working hard is a really good thing because not only does it provide for our families what they need but it encourages us with a lot more challenges.”
