Think of others and share their suffering. If you can help, that would be great.

That’s the belief of Fuluasou Afuvai of Fusi Saoluafata who is a man committed to looking after his elderly parents.

The 62-year-old says the greatest joy is being able to help someone – even with whatever little you have.

“The joy comes from putting the welfare of others above our own. That is what love is,” he said.

“My family’s wellbeing is my first responsibility and I will do whatever it takes to provide for them.”

Fuluasou said none of his family members have a formal job.

“Being responsible for two elderly parents is hard and without a job it is harder. We only get help from my daughter once a month because she also has bills to pay.

“Right now I can’t really work at planting a plantation because I can’t let my sick wife take care my elderly parents.”

When he has the time, Fuluasou goes fishing.

“It’s mostly for our food,” he said. “The way I see things, whenever you try to take care of your family there will always be struggles but we must always give it our all for anything we do for our loved ones.”

Asked if he wanted to work in the future he say he would love to but he can’t leave his parents alone at home.

“I only hope the government could help us out by sending doctors to rural areas to check on our elderly mothers and fathers so that we don’t struggle to try and go to Apia,” he said.

“But I would never let any hardship stop me from working to take care of my family especially my elderly parents”
