Samata welcomes Japan’s help

Students and teachers of Samata i Uta Primary School in the big island of Savai’i are the lucky recipients of eight new class rooms, a staff room and a library to cater for their educational needs.

This is all thanks to the Government of Japan through its Grassroots Human Security Projects (G.G.P).

Earlier this year on March 10 2017, a grant signing ceremony was held to officially announce full funding of $279,308 to complete the project.

This will ensure that M.E.S.C’s minimum standards which include the need to have safe and sound school buildings, a healthy learning environment as well as sufficient classrooms for students and teachers are met.

Japan has always aligned its funding with priorities outline in the SDS which lists Education as a priority.

Japan’s G.G.P was launched in 1991 to support small scale projects directly benefitting the grassroots level as well as contributing to the socio- economic development of the Independent State of Samoa.

Since then, various grassroots projects have been implemented by non- governmental organisations, (N.G.Os), local government units (L.G.Us) and other non- profit organisations.

This project will of course continue to strengthen the friendly ties between the people of Samoa and Japan.
