Samoa Observer Reporter, Elizabeth Ah-Hi, is in Singapore to attend a Google Lab conference.

Ms. Ah Hi is taking part in a meeting that is looking at combating hoaxes and "fake news" that have proliferated globally in recent years as social media becomes a major platform for news.

The Samoa Observer was invited through the U.S Embassy to attend the media workshop, hosted by Google South East Asia hub in Singapore.

The workshop is part of the Google News Initiative to build a stronger future for journalism in an effort to work with the news industry to help journalism thrive in a digital age.

Joining media personnel from mainly South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and America - journalists went through a hands on two-day workshop on how to identify eyewitess media, fabricated websites, visual memes and manipulated videos that emerge online.

Trainers from Storyful, Google News Lab and Facebook led the participants of the workshop on the latest methods and tools available online to factcheck information and verify social content.

Google C.E.O, Sundhar Pichai, emphasised the need to ensure that quality journalism thrives in an era where misinformation and disinformation threatens democracy.

"Google cares deeply about journalism - yes, because of the crucial role it plays in a democratic society. Ensuring the spread of knowledge and the free flow of information."
