Develop the next group

Dear Editor,

Re: A heartbroken coach

This is probably the most heartbroken I’ve been as a Samoan rugby fan. Possession is the key to 7s rugby. We need players who can dominate the kick-offs again.

Dominating the air like what we did back in the days of Jerry Meafou and Simaika Mikaele is the key to Samoan success again.  The glory years of 2007-2012 was built on the back of our control of the kick-offs and also the way Lolo Lui and Uale Mai masterminded how we used possession. We need to develop the next Lolo Lui, Uale Mai, Simaika Mikaele, Alafoti Fa’osiliva, and Pesamino again.

Therefore, Samoa needs to invest in its youth development structures.

We have the talent. We just need to develop them in Samoa. Those people who say it can’t be done now, I say to them, how did we defeat the world in 2010 then? We did it with an all-local team of innovative and smart players.
