Family needs help with tarpaulins

Filauia Hunt of Alaoa lives in struggle.

For 21 years, the unemployed mother of six has lived in a small house with unstable water supply and no proper kitchen.

She is seeking assistance for a better home and her main concern is her children.

“As you can see the way that we have built this house, we are using pieces of wood. The material that has been used has worn out and it is no longer safe to live in,” Mrs. Hunt said to the Village Voice team yesterday.

“We need tarpaulins for our house because when it rains it will come straight into our home. So having a tarpaulin does keep our belongings safe from the rain.

“We don’t have a kitchen either. The sink stands outside and a small wooden shelf that has been built to place our plates on. So in terms of preparing our meals on a daily basis, there are some challenges that I face.

“This place that we live in, the land belongs to my husband’s family,” said the 45-year-old.

Mrs. Hunt and her family live close to the river, but she is in need of a water tank in case the weather worsens.

“Having a water tank makes everything easier because there are times when it will rain heavily and it dirties the water.

“We are in need of a water tank. Though we live near a river, we are certainly not safe. The water does not reach our home during cyclones and other natural disasters would cause the river banks to burst.

“The tap water works but we turn it on from the other end to use. It is good that we get a water tank so it will save the money to pay for the water bills.”

Her husband works but his earnings are not enough.

“All of my children are in school. Our two eldest children are in Year 13 and when they reach university levels the fees will cost even more.

“My husband works but at the same time we also sell wood just to earn extra money. We do this so that my children will be able to have something for the week.”
