Five young Samoan golfers will be representing our small Island Nation at the 2018 International Management Group (I.M.G.) Junior World Golf Championships from July 9-13th in San Diego.

They are Faith Vui who will be competing in the 13-14 year old Girls category, Kilo Brown and Aaron Evalu in the 11-12 year old boys category, and Lio Vui and Greg Atapana 13-14 year old boys age group and is coached by Atapana Sanerivi, Van Wright and Garry Vui.

According to a statement from Samoa Golf Incorporated and trials coordinator Garry Vui, the final five players to represent Samoa were selected after trials hosted in the past six weeks with ten Rounds, five at Fagali’i and five at the Faleata Golf Course.

He said Samoa Golf had Junior Golfers travelled and competed in the San Diego World Champs, but representing American Samoa.

“We held trials for these spots over the past 6 weeks over 10 rounds with 5 rounds at Faleata Golf Course and 5 at Fagalii Golf Course, and after the completion of these trials last Saturday, we have finalized our final team to represent Samoa.”

“We have had juniors travel to San Diego in the past, most recently Aileen Meredith, Leleaga Meredith, Olive Tapu, Lio Vui and Niko Vui through the kind assistance and support of the American Samoa Junior Golf Association, and these juniors represented American Samoa with pride.”

“I approached the I.M.G. Junior World committee this year and requested few spots for different age groups and have been granted 2 spots for our 11-12 year old boys, 2 spots for the 13-14 year old boys and 1  spot for the 13-14 year old girls for Samoa.”

Vui also said their players will go to San Diego not only to learn more about playing this great game, but getting to meet new friends, see how juniors from around the world play, experience new golf courses, but more importantly representing Samoa with pride.

He acknowledged the support and assistance of all the people through their Junior Golf team’s preparations.

“The objective Samoa Golf Incorporated is looking forward that this trip is to setup our committee on the return to ensure we have our top juniors to represent Samoa in the future at the biggest Junior golf tournament in the world, and help develop our juniors become better players for Samoa’s future in the South Pacific Games, Asian Amateur as well as earning scholarships to U.S. Colleges.”

The Young Samoan Golfer’s team is currently looking for any support they can get in helping and assistance in the next few months in getting their Junior team’s trip to the World Championships in San Diego.
