Change is inevitable.

Whether we are ready or not, it happens.

Liaina Tuluauau, of Avano Fasito’o uta, said she has seen so many changes over the years.

The 69-year-old grandmother believes change is a good thing.

“There are many changes nowadays but some people don’t like them,” she tells the Village Voice.

“But there are other people who thrive because of change.

“Let’s look at the youth; it is one of the many changes that I love. The fact that most of them have access to better working opportunities now; not just in Samoa but also around parts of the world.”

But it’s not just educational opportunities.

There is something for everyone, she said.

“It’s also good to see that young villagers or the youth within our villages are making use of their time in working the land when they don’t have opportunities to work or study further,” she said.

The cost of living, she added, is a real challenge.

But it’s also an opportunity.

“The cost of living is so expensive,” she said. “It is something we should use as a motivation to go back to our lands and make use of it.

“I’m happy that I am staying in an environment where you see everyone work, from young people to old people. They are sweating to do something good and it gives you that feeling of being proud.”

Liaina is also happy about the improvement and development of our education system.

“All these things that are new to us; I believe it’s all for a good cause. If not for us, then it’s for our children who will become the future of our country.

“I believe there’s no such thing as bad change. Change is always for the better but it is how we anticipate it and react to it that make things seem different than what they are.

Change can teach us to adapt and help us to develop in terms of growth in knowledge and learning new things.”
