Samoa highlights achievements in Geneva

The Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers, is leading delegation from Samoa to a key meeting in Geneva.

Having ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1994, the delegation is attending the second reporting session to the U.N.C.R.C Committee on achievements and progress made thus far on the promotion and protection of children’s rights. 

In addressing the meeting, Minister Faimalotoa highlighted the key milestones achieved by Samoa since its last reporting obligations in 2005. 

The Minister highlighted the fact that Samoa is the first Pacific Island country to have submitted the instruments for the ratification of the three optional protocols for C.R.C. She also emphasized Samoa taking the lead in the region in setting up the National Human Rights Institutions in 2013. 

Samoa also remains steadfast in its commitment to the ratification and implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities C.R.P.D, which is also commended by the National State of the Human Rights Report. 

Samoa’s delegation includes the Chief Executive Officer, Fuimapoao Beth Onesemo – Tuilaepa, Senior Child Protection Officer, Nora Rose Warren, Chief Executive Officer of Loto Taumafai Society for People with Disabilities, Leta’a Dan Devoe and Special Advisor, Vanessa Barlow Schuster.
