Visiting American couple Andy and Nancy Raatz have described Samoa as breathtakingly gorgeous.

They initially travelled to American Samoa for a church conference and decided to stop over in Samoa for a visit.

“We came in a few days ahead with a friend who had lived here 30 years ago, so [we’re] visiting here and we have really enjoyed Samoa,” Nancy said.

“Yesterday we went to a bunch of churches and then one of the guys with the pastor’s sons, in the evening, we went out with him to visit his fish trap,” added Andy.

Married for close to 30 years, the couple said they are just exploring life in Samoa.

“We drove around and it’s beautiful, I mean the country is just absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous.

“Whether you’re looking at the ocean or looking at the mountains, it is beautiful and the people are beautiful too, so lovely and kind,” she said.

Turning 52 last weekend, Nancy is of the view that Samoa is the best place to celebrate her birthday. Their stay in Samoa has already seen them visit popular spots, such as the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, which excited them. Coincidentally, Nancy attended the Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary in America as a little girl.

The weather in Samoa, especially the heat, has been a challenge for visitors and the locals. But the couple did not have a complaint about the weather, though they said they had a hard time trying to find a map of the island.

“It’s gorgeous and beautiful here, the sun is hot but we expected that, but the only problem was that we couldn’t really get a map.

“Luckily we had someone to show us around, he rode with us and so he was our map,” the couple said laughing.

Andy and Nancy, who hail from Missouri, have been spending a lot of time on the road doing church work. Their travel itinerary has included countries in the Middle East and Russia.
