Water is a necessity of life and we need it

Meet Vaosea Sonalote.

The 34-year-old is from the village of Vaitele and Samalaeulu Savaii.

When the Village Voice caught up with him, he just finished work and he was on his way home.

Vaosea told the Village Voice that everything is going well at home except the fact that they don’t have water of their own.

That’s the main struggle they’re facing right now and he fears his children do not cope well without water.

“I work at the Ministry of Agriculture here at Vaitele; in planting different kind of crops, cabbages and everything else that you can see,” he tells Village Voice.

“I’m the one who works for my family so I get paid fortnightly which is good.

“But to me no matter how well things go for us, the only thing that’s heavy in my mind is the fact that we don’t have access to water.

“The truth is, I cannot afford to make that happen yet so everyday we use our neighbors water for making food, for drinking and even showering.

“I’m lucky that I live close to where I work otherwise another worry for me will be money for my fare everyday.

“But I walk to work and then back home again.

“That’s not a problem to me though; it’s just having no water that I’m worried about.

“I’m worried because I have four children at home and I’m trying my best to work twice as hard so I can take care of that basic need.”

Vaosea’s eldest son is only 6 years old and the others are still young to understand the struggles that they are going through.

“We need water and that’s something I’ve always been dreaming to achieve but I know I’m not even close to achieving it.”
