Michael Cheika has extended his contract with the Australian Rugby Union to remain as head coach of the Wallabies through to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The ARU said in a statement Thursday that Cheika, who guided Australia to the World Cup final last year in England, agreed to a two-year contract extension 18 months before his current contract was due to expire. No monetary amounts were released.

Cheika, who formerly coached the New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby, was voted World Rugby coach of the year in 2015.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver praised Cheika for the "wonderful culture and a renewed pride in the gold jersey that Michael has instilled in the team."
