Tough life without formal work

Dreams will not materialise unless you work.

For Merita Fa’ivalu, she has so many dreams for her family, which is why she is looking for a job.

Merita, 22, is from the village of Falefa.

Yesterday, she told the Village Voice that without a job, life is very complicated.

“My husband is a fisherman,” she said. “Sometimes we get good money from it, sometimes we don’t and sometimes we just don’t get anything at all.”

“Our family is a developing family and I want to work to make life easier and to make our dreams come true.”

“But even getting a job is not an easy thing to do anymore.”

Merita is a mother of four children.

One remains in school.

Merita said that they don’t have their own water nor do they have their own power, which is why at the moment, they are living off their uncle’s power lines, which they also have to pay for.

“We fetch our water from the village’s spring water and it’s a long way from our place.”

“As you can see, we’re still trying to develop our house. As a mother, I need to make things happen for my own family. I don’t want us to depend on anyone.”

“This is why I’ve been looking for jobs because now I have my husband to look after my children but I’m still searching.”

No luck yet.

“I need to finance things such as my children’s needs, get our own water, get our own electricity and trying to make our home look more like a home. As you can see, it’s not cemented.”

“Nowadays, money talks. If you don’t work; you’re going to be in the same place forever.”

“I need a job because I dream about the good things that I want for my family and I need to work to make that happen.”

Merita said she’s capable of any work. If she’s not, she’s willing to learn if she’s given an opportunity.

“We all know that most of the things we need today, we have to pay for it. And one must work to earn money.”
