Robert Louis Stevenson Primary has stepped in to help Samoa’s heroine, Ele Opeloge.

On Friday, the Lotopa-based school came together and contributed $700 to the Samoa Observer’s Ele Fund.

A special assembly of close to 300 students were present to see the handover of their donations.

Speaking during assembly, Principal Fiaapia Devoe said the amount might not be significant but the students and teachers genuinely wanted to give back to Ele.

“We would like you to please convey to Ele that we are proud of her and thank her for all the hard work that she’s done for Samoa and for putting Samoa on the map in the field of weightlifting,” Ms. Devoe said.

“We would like to say congratulations to Ele and we wish her well and ask her if she could do a little bit more for us before she retires from weightlifting.”

Ms. Devoe also acknowledged Ele’s coach and the President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork.

“We also would like to mention Tuaopepe. We wish them well we hope that we can send more lifters to the Olympic Games.”

The children also prepared a special number from the movie Moana, “We know the way,” and also a special siva Samoa in honour of Samoa’s sporting heroine.

Samoa Observer’s Coordinator of Newspaper in Education, Marj Moore, who is a former teacher of Robert Louis Stevenson, accepted the donation.

She spoke about the significance of this achievement for Ele, who worked hard for 10 long years for this accomplishment.

She encouraged the children that they too can achieve like Ele if they work hard enough.

Ele and her family are scheduled to arrive on Thursday.

In the meantime, the Samoa Observer Ele’s Fund account remains open until Friday.
