The staff of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) conducted a tree planting at the Vailima Reserve last Friday as one of its final activities to finish off the year.

The tree planting, which is an initiative of the SPREP Le Coral Social Club, brought together SPREP staff and their families in an effort  to contribute to Samoa’s 2 million tree campaign and support the current restoration works at the Vailima Reserve.

One thousand trees were planted by the SPREP family, making it a total of 3,000 trees planted since the initiative first started in August 2018.

The Le Coral social club aims to plant 5,000 trees in total during their tenure as the staff social club with an aim of continuing it as an on-going activity by staff.

President of Le Coral Club, Christian Slaven, said, “Planting trees is one way to address the issues of global warming and biodiversity loss. We want to encourage our SPREP staff and community  to take responsibility, take action, and plant a tree.”

“Tree planting not only contributes to reversing biodiversity loss, it is also a good form of exercise and a great way to be in direct contact with nature.”

The tree planting was organised in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
