The Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.) has started a development programme called Get into Rugby (G.I.R.) that targets primary schools around the Vaimauga and Faleata District.

The programme focuses on developing basic rugby skills among the young generations of Samoa.

According to G.I.R. Coordinator, Filoi Eneliko, the programme also targets healthy living and opportunities for gender equality.

Students are also taught leadership skills and they are motivated to attend school and engage in quality educational activities.

From what she has seen so far, she said it is amazing to watch kids actively enjoy themselves.

“As we know that rugby is now an Olympic Sport, we are pushing for more females to participate in the game,” she said.

“And who knows those young girls and boys might be medal winners in the future for Samoa and good ambassadors for the game that we all love.”

They have invited various schools to register different age teams for both genders from Under 8, 12, 10 and 14 categories.

They are also conducting their weekly G.I.R. Saturday programme for both boys and girls from ages five -18 at the S.R.U. headquarters at Tuanaimato from 8:00am-10:00am.

G.I.R. is hosting rugby festivals in Savaii on May 21-22, and 6-8 June for primary schools on Upolu.
