Water supply vital for survival

The lack of water supply is a concern for Seti Saofaiga from Saleimoa.

Fifty-five-year-old Seti and his family do not have water gallons or a water tank. Despite living in a shack, for him water is the most vital need any human being needs to survive.

The unemployed father of six said he fears for the welfare of his children and is thankful for his neighbours and those who help his family every day.

“We really need water because water is for everything. In any home, water is needed to carry out our normal tasks, whether it is washing the dishes and also for people like us who cannot afford a washing a machine,” Seti said.

“We need a water tank to store water for cooking and drinking as well. I feel for my children because they are the ones who deal with fetching water buckets. Even when it comes to cooking, we need fresh water to cook our meals. We cannot use any other kind of water because then we are being careless and people who would eat the food we cook could get sick.”

Despite their daily challenges, he is optimistic that their lives will improve one day and things will get better.

“We have been here for a while now and in this life that we are in, everyone needs help. My brother’s children usually come and stay here,” he said and indicated that they already have electricity and have plans to build a house.

“My family is helping us out. I have three children who are here with me when others are at their mother’s family,” he added and indicated that he and his wife are both unemployed but live off the land.
