The government has a responsibility to provide the basic necessities for its people.

If the government does not do that, where will people go?

In Samoa today, many of families are struggling for basic things like water.

The family of Segia Salu of Nofoali’i and Tiavea is among them.

They struggle everyday to find water.

Segia is a mother of eight children and currently taking care of them as well as her elderly mother.

“We’ve been staying at the forestry area for a long time and we’ve never had any water,” said Segia.

“It’s nothing new because from the time of our ancestors, this has always been the case.

“A new generation is here and nothing has changed. Nothing!

“We have no water tank so we get water from the family down our road.

“We always come with buckets to fetch water from their place; it’s a hard job and even worse because we need to do it everyday to survive.

“Water defines life and I know because I have lived through times where we face the struggle; if there is no water, food doesn’t even matter to anyone.

“We need water for our laundry even but whatever water we get, we save it for drinking.

“We’ve asked the Samoa Water Authority for help before but there is no answer up to now.

Segia and her family not only struggle with water but they also struggle with the long distance from their area to the inner village.

“Our house is far away and there are no cars and buses barely come this way. So we always have to walk.

“We’re a lowly family; we don’t have much so we just try to survive on what we have.”
