The wrong priorities

Dear Editor,

I believe that most of the dropouts, certainly here in Savai’i, are due to the lack of English skills needed to participate in year 9 and above.

Every year I see many students head off to the local colleges for year 9, only to see them hanging around the village by March once they find they cannot keep up with the English.

The blame for this must lie with the primary school teachers and their inability to motivate students to learn, as well as their incompetence in teaching a proper curriculum.

When my son was in the local primary schools, the teachers would finish school a couple of hours early every second Wednesday so they could go shopping in Salelologa on payday.

Priorities are all wrong about and there is little passion or responsibility for educating the next generation of Samoans.
