Tough to fight Mother Nature

Dear Editor,

I write in reference to the article in your newspaper about the rubbish on Vaisigano beach.

It is a sad fact that this cannot really be kept clean and attractive without almost continuous expensive machine cleaning.

The majority of debris, both natural vegetation and human rubbish, washing continuously down the Vaisigano river is naturally washed back onto this area by wave and wind action when it enters the harbour.

There is virtually no way to prevent this other than trying to limit human rubbish, which is extremely difficult in itself.

The problem reaches a peak in periods of high rainfall and indeed is illustrated by the debris damage to the original Leone bridge a few years ago.

The black sand is somewhat unattractive in itself consisting of leached soils washed from the hills. The concept of a beach in this location is a nice but unfortunately the next major sea storm or cyclone will very likely wash it completely away, returning naturally to the exposed seawall evident in the background of the picture which previously existed here.

It is all too easy to blame relevant Ministries for the problem but there is a limitation on what they can achieve here against Mother Nature.
