Saturday night at Gym 1 Tuanaimato saw the greatest showdown of dancing Samoa has to offer. But it was finally BlackieYes who reigned supreme at TV1’s Samoa Best Dance Crew (S.B.D.C.) competition.

The crowd went wild  during the evening as family, friends and possibly the entire village of Vaimoso, came out to support their crews who represented them with pride.

In a close finish, and after amazing performances from all groups, the two best dance crews were whittled down to just two - the Afaluko Boys and BlackieYes from Vaiala.

Then it was more heart-stopping moments before, the judges revealed BlackieYes to be the champions of the night.

Dressed as robots, their futuristic flow proved they were a force to be reckoned with.

According to their manager, Siu Fanolua, the inspiration behind the name BlackieYes, was a nod to their Vaiala Rugby Team, who sport black jerseys on game days.  The inclusion of the word ‘Y’es at the end is a reminder that, “YES we can do anything we put our minds to,” he said.

The team came away with the Cup and the grand prize of $6,000. They already have big plans on how to spend their prize money.

“We’re going to develop our younger youth for dancing.  We’re from a youth (group) and we’re going to give some of the money to further develop our youth.”

BlackieYes weren’t the only stars of the night.

Attending the event was superstar dancer , Naldo Clarence, who dub stepped his way to the top of America’s Performing Arts Programme.

Of Samoan and Caribbean heritage, Clarence was ecstatic and excited as ever to showcase his talent to all of Samoa.

Not only is he an excellent dancer, Clarence even performed his new single, “When I get famous” which will be released January 21st.

And Clarence’s performance was not the only highlight of the night.

Many dance groups pulled out all stops with their props and ingenuity.  The majority of the groups incorporated characters and props from the movie, “Moana,” which made quite an interesting scene as most of them were all-male crews but someone had to play Moana.

Each crew worked extremely hard to make it to the finale and it definitely showed on the night.
