Chairman declares conflict of interest
The Chairman of the Public Service Commission (P.S.C), Tu’u’u Dr. Ieti Taulealo, has declared a conflict of interest in assessing applications for a new Attorney General.
Tu’u’u told the Weekend Observer yesterday that he has a conflict of interest because of one of the applicants
He declined, however, to disclose who that applicant is
“So I’m staying away from the panel,” said the Chairman.
“Mulitalo Esekia of the Tribunal is chairing the panel and another member of the Commission will be brought on board together with a further independent member from outside.”
The position of Attorney General is open to locals and Samoans living overseas.
The current Attorney General is Aumua Ming Leung Wai whose term will finish this month.
In a recent interview, Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, confirmed Aumua’s decision not to reapply for the position.
“He has other plans,” said Tuilaepa.
He added the position had been advertised and the selection process was already underway.
The Attorney General’s position is one of two key positions in the legal sector up for grabs.
Another one is the Director of the newly established National Prosecutions Office.
Cabinet is expected to make a decision soon.
