It’s not the real reason they fell

Dear Editor,

Re: Lessons for the Tautua

I agree that that was an incredibly misguided platform piece for the Tautua party to promise but I disagree that this was the real reason they were decimated.

Many Samoans I think would support keeping Sunday as a day of the Lord.

What about monotaga laws being passed during the last government’s term and court cases being allowed to proceed days before the elections, what about rumours people complained of that their village matais forced them to vote a certain way, what about the rumours of bribes of chicken and tala?

I don’t know but I suspect the decimation of the official opposition party had more to do with some other factors than them saying Sunday would be a day for the Lord.

When I heard them say that I didn’t think they would really do it anyway if they won power because that is when there would have been backlash from the tourist and business industry and the growing secular sector in Samoa.

Samoa has thankfully already accepted business as usual on Sunday and as far as I have ever seen once that out-dated idea is in the past, it’s in the past for good. Not even conservative Christians can bring back shutting Sunday down once it is happening as it is in Apia anyway.
