The value of making right choices

Fautua Fautua from the village of Vaitele-Fou believes the key to a better life lies in one’s ability to make good decisions.

Aged 40 and employed at K.L. Security, Fautua stresses the importance of choices and education in response to questions on the daily life in Samoa.

Although he believes that the cost of living is becoming unbearable, he says that the only way to make things a little easier on ourselves is through proper money management and better understanding of what to prioritise.

“My understanding is that life is definitely expensive here  in Samoa,” Fautua said.

“Prices for goods at the shops go up all the time and there’s nothing we can do about that. On the other hand, I do believe that we can make things a little easier on ourselves by using our heads when it comes to money.

“I believe that the key to a better life is through better money management. Knowing what is important from what is not, will help you in the long run.

“There will be times when we get our money and then realize that it’s gone the next moment.”

His advice to the people of Samoa is simply “spend money on what you need and not what you want.

“If you see that you can’t provide for your family and that you are struggling financially, then don’t buy beer or cigarettes.

“That’s all there is to it. If you do not need it, then just don’t buy it. That’s what I mean by separating what’s important from what isn’t.”

“That’s what I have noticed with a lot of families here. Wasting money only leads to struggles.”

Asked if he has any other advice for Samoans searching for a better life, Fautua explained the importance of education.

“Another key to a better life is education,” he said.

“I strongly believe in educating our young because when they grow up, they will be able to find better jobs and will be able to live a better life.

“Educating them at home about how to make better decisions will also help lessen the burden of daily struggles because they will grow up and have a good understanding of the importance of choices.

“That’s all I can really say about life in Samoa.”
