Changes come with a price. Everyone pays.

So says Vai Tuliu, a concerned citizen, who believes many of the challenges we are facing today are the result of changes.

He argues that nowadays, life is all about images and public perception. This is what is hurting most people.

“Nowadays we have our young ones that are addicted to social media; they always want what is trending,” he said.

“If they see on the internet that girls overseas are wearing mini-shorts the following day they would want to a pair of mini-shorts as well but this not what makes the Samoan people Samoans.”

Vai accepts that technology is good, it has helped made life easier for the Samoan people.

But others have abused it so much too.

“This is not the way of our Samoan culture. This why we have so many rapes and incest cases because our young daughters are not mindful of what they wear. Some of them are leaving themselves vulnerable with what they wear. They need to be mindful of that.”

Talking to the Village Voice, the 53-year-old from Vailele said you will know a Samoan lady by the way they dress, the way they talk, the way they sit and the way they hold themselves.

Within a Samoan family, a brother does not wear his sister’s clothes and the same goes for the sister.

He said that there are so many boundaries that have been broken which is why there are so many problems within our country.

The father of seven is certain that everything starts from within the family.

Vai also said that the parents should stop turning a blind eye and accepting things the way it is.

“This is our job as parents to speak to our children and stand our ground,” he said.

“If we see what is not right don’t wait for a next time because it could be too late.”

He said every child should know their value and they must have principles to guide them so that they will not be easily influenced by foreign ways.

“Having morals is very important because you are able to know what you stand for because you do not know what you stand for then you will fall for anything,” he said.
