Samoa College group bound for China

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China hosted a farewell function for three teachers and eight students from Samoa College on Wednesday. 

The teachers and students will participate in an education exchange programme in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, China.

The programme, themed “Discover Huizhou: A Tour of Friendship between Chinese and Samoan Youngsters”, is part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by China and Samoa in 2015. 

The programme runs for 12 days from September 18-29. 

It includes cultural tours, one-on-one partner activities, art classes and excursions. All costs with regard to this visit shall be borne by Huizhou, a press statement highlighted.

As sister school, Huizhou Hualuogeng Secondary School has donated one set of electronic teaching platform, one computer class to Samoa College, the statement said. 

According to the release, last two years, 100 students from Samoa College were funded by “Guangdong (Huizhou) Friendship scholarships”. This year, another 50 students from Samoa College will be funded by these scholarships.

Huizhou is a city in southeast Guangdong Province, China, and has about 4.6 million inhabitants.

From 2016, Huizhou Municipal People’s government donated 23 sets of electronic teaching platforms and three computer rooms to Samoan colleges and provided fund assistance to more than 2,000 students from 60 primary schools and colleges through “Guangdong (Huizhou) Friendship Scholarship”. 

Huizhou Municipal People’s government has also donated medical equipment, which is worth $3.2 million tala to local hospitals.
