Families living next to a stretch of road works at Vaitele-tai are furious.

They are unhappy that the contractor had not completed the work, leaving them and their children “to eat” all the dust swept up by passing vehicles.

As a result, families have resorted to throwing rocks on the road in a bid to slow down the speeding vehicles.

This was a photo taken this week where rocks were literally left on the road, posing a huge risk to motorists and the travelling public.

One resident said the road has been in this condition for two months and they are tired of it.

“The old tar has been removed due to heavy rain and there is a need for new tar to be laid,” he said.

“But it has been two months since this road has been left exposed and it has been that long since we’ve had to put up with the dust day and night.”

According to the resident, when he contacted the Land Transport Authority for help, he was advised to place rocks on the road.

“Our family has suffered for so long,” he said. “Our family has so many kids and old people and they are getting sick breathing in all the dust.”

When the Samoa Observer contacted the L.T.A. for a comment, an official said they would contact the contractor to find out what was happening.

Not long after, the resident said: “Only today that we saw a truck bringing water to water the road but it’s still no good at all. It’s still meaningless because it will stop the dust for that time but after a few hours, we are back to same problem.”
