If you are from Savai’i and you are looking for a place to find good quality, and delicious cakes for any occasion, Taefu Taulagi Matafeo Cake Shop in Asaga Savai’i is the place for you.

Owned and managed by Netta Hartin, the 52-year-old is passionate about baking.

Mrs. Hartin saw the need to open a cake business when she visited Samoa in 2006.

“I enjoy baking,” she told the Samoa Observer. “I love good food and cakes.

“When I came back to Samoa in 2006, there was a big disappointment in terms of good quality cakes. I was invited to a few weddings around that time and the cake was like eating lard with sugar, there was no quality in any sweets even the resorts were just as bad.”

Mrs. Hartin used to bake birthday cakes for her friends and families, and wedding cakes in Sydney Australia, where she was residing.

“When I decided to come back to Samoa to take care of my dad, when my mum passed away, I chose to make a living by baking quality Cakes at a reasonable price,” she said. “And it has been unbelievable since I started my business and I’m very blessed.

“This is something I am passionate about and I love what I do so much that it doesn’t even feel like I am working.

“I have orders coming from people all around the country.”

Mrs. Hartin said she also receives orders from people living overseas for their weddings here in Samoa.

Baking every day and night is Mrs. Hartin’s hobby. Ask her any type of cake you want and she would know the exact ingredients for your satisfaction.

“When someone asks me for the type of cake they want, the recipe and ingredients just comes natural for me,” she said.

Moreover, Mrs. Hartin said she has her mother to thank for the passion and love in baking.

“In the year, 2010 I made my dad a pudding for our Sunday desert, and he said, you’re almost as good as your mum,” she said.

“My dad told me that my mom used to bake delicious puddings and sponge cakes for white Sundays, back in the days.

“And it was like Christmas in the village in those days because everyone loved my mother’s baking.

“So baking for me is natural because I inherited it from my mum.”

She also said that she gets her motivation from her father, families and friends.

Her mud chocolate cake is everyone’s favourite, she said.

“Tourist and local people love my chocolate cake. They called it Samoa’s best chocolate cake,” she said.

“People also love my Fruit and carrot cakes, Pavlova, cheese cakes, Sponge cakes and pudding.

“One old lady from America, who visited Savaii one time, came here especially to taste my cake and she really loved my cakes. She said to me, “we’ll done, don’t change a thing, the icing is very tasty, a Cake must look good and taste good. She even gave me a little secret about butter icing.”

Mrs. Hartin is married to Kevin Hartin, and they own the Taefu Taulagi Matafeo Cake Shop in Asaga Savaii.
