Corned beef consequences

Dear Editor,

Interesting reading this case about the corned beef being investigate. Corned beef is a food that was brought to Samoa by its colonial masters in the past and has remained as a staple diet of our people for at least the last century and a half.

As a food, it is high in fat and sodium nitrate. Nitrate in many casesis linked to colon cancer, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and other illnesses.

It has also been found to inhibit growth in mice during lab tests.

It’s no wonder our people are suffering from a multitude of diet related diseases as well as being short and in many cases, overweight!

Our hunger for corned beef comes with health consequences, which is easily preventable.
