Members of a Chinese Medical team who has been making a difference at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital – and other hospitals throughout the country - are preparing to return home with many wonderful memories of Samoa.

The team arrived in July last year for a six-month stint.

They will be replaced by another team from China, Team Leader and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Hong Xinyu said.

“There are six of us that came in the Chinese medical team that is through the current agreement which exists between the governments of Samoa and China,” he said.

“The agreement is where China provides a certain amount of medicine, equipment and a medical team to the Samoan Government.”

The team consists of Dr. Hong Xinyu, Dr. Wang Jinguo, Dr. Zhang Zhiguo, Dr. Gang Xiaokun, Dr. Wang Le and Dr. Qi Baochang.

“It has been a great experience working as a volunteer in Samoa,” said Dr. Xinyu.

“During my stay, I conducted a craniotomy in to save the life of a young boy who was fatally injured in an accident.

“My other colleagues did work in their professional line of duty like Urology, Traumatic Orthopedics, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Endocrinology.”

Dr. Hong said the goal for the Chinese medical team was to build capacity, exchange ideas, share and transfer knowledge and skills to Samoa medical professionals.

“We have a wonderful relationship with the local medical professionals and we have also shared skills and knowledge that will help each other for our line of professions.

“I have learnt so much during my stay like using the limited resources available at the hospital to care for the patients. I commend the work done by doctors here in Samoa because they have to use what is available to them through equipment and medicine.

“Samoa is a beautiful country with friendly people and it was a good experience for me here.”

The second group of medical professionals is scheduled to arrive later this month.
