Family inspires man to work hard

Our families motivate us to work harder.

Oli Mua’au lives by those words everyday because it keeps him going.

He is a 19-year-old from Falefa, who is currently working as a gardener for a family at Falelauniu.

“This is my first job and I’m doing okay with it so far,” he told the Village Voice team.

“I know it seems a bit far but I enjoy taking the bus every morning to get here.”

Oli said he used to attend Anoama’a College and when he finished school, he started looking for jobs because no one in his family works.

“My father passed away at the beginning of this year. My two siblings both used to work but somehow, they gave up along the way and now they’re at home looking after my mother.

“I think with everything that went on and happened in my life, it made me realise that it was time to take things on by myself and do something good in my life for my mother and family.

“Being able to attend school has given me the knowledge about what it means to work and understand how things work in the real world, and I know the work that I’m doing now doesn’t seem much, but it’s a job and I got it on my own, without anybody else’s help. Not only that, I’d like to think that this is just the beginning.”

The 19-year-old was going about, cleaning the lands, yesterday, when the Village Voice spotted him.

“I’m the youngest amongst us and I’m willing to take care of my family.

“They have done so much for me by helping me to complete my college years, in the best way they could, and now it’s my time to give back.

“I think that’s something that I want to encourage all our youth and future generations to do, take care of your family and work on ways to improve the life they have. When you feel that you are ready to do it, do it, because no one stays young forever.”
