Samoa Observer’s new book at Pasifika Festival

After a day of showers on Friday, the first day of the 2016 Pasifika Festival yesterday, was one of those special Auckland days with sunshine and a cool breeze.

Billed as Auckland's premiere food and cultural festival, it was back at the Western Springs venue again.

The early morning crowd around began arriving before 9am to wander around the island villages linked by paths that meandered through the tree clad area.

The Samoa village was out on its own past the Ministry of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) but the crowd didn't take long to find it.

To market and publicise the book 'Our Heritage, the Ocean' - a collection of the best short stories from the 2015 Samoa Observer Tusitala Short Story competition, the Samoa Observer was there.

They shared a tent with Eveni, Max sportswear and other handicrafts and manufactured products from Samoa and a lot of interest was shown in the brand new book.

"We were collecting the copies to bring back to Samoa so it made sense to also have some of them available at this event for festival-goers," said Fata Didien Malifa.

Pasifika is definitely a family affair with a very casual vibe and lots of music and performances to entertain those who preferred to lay down a mat and just look and listen.

As well as a huge stage inside a tent where the main acts performed, the stalls were arranged in a circle so people could wander around, browsing, picking up food and drinks and checking out the goods.

The festival continues today.
