Building inspection

In 2012 Samoa, celebrated its 50th anniversary of Independence. The Government of Australia announced that it would co-fund with Samoa a significant infrastructure project to reconstruct the Maota Fono on its original site here at Mulinu’u.

The project involves the rebuilding of the iconic chamber in a similar form to the original 1970s building including members seating speaker’s podium hansard area public gallery government and opposition meeting rooms speakers meeting room translation and press areas.

The Maota Fono is an important symbol of Samoan independence and culture. I am happy to see that the aesthetics of the new Parliament building reflects Samoan traditions and that art work crafts and artefacts are an integral part of the interior design and building openings.

The design also takes into account climate resilience given its coastal location as well as occupational health and safety standards

As Prime Minister I have followed closely the progress of the Parliament complex, my Parliamentary colleagues are keen to bring the debates back to Tiafau well before the conclusion of our current terms as Members of Parliament.

I am particularly proud that a Samoan firm is undertaking the construction. I am also cognizant of the fact that the design firm Manteena for the Parliament building is the same firm that constructed our iconic High Commission in Canberra. In short the connection continues and that is a reflection of the strong relations between our two countries.

Rt Hon Minister Bishop I am happy to join you this afternoon to witness the progress of the work to date and that it will not be long now before this Maota Fono reopens its doors to the political decision makers of Samoa.

I am happy to receive the Time Capsule that provides an indication of the timelines for this project. I again thank the Government of Australia for the support and that we hope to see a phase two in the not too distant future.
