Appreciate what we have

Be grateful and appreciate what you have – whether it’s little or a lot.

Ask Timi Simoi of Matatufu and that’s what he will tell you.

He said that concerns about the high cost of living varies depending on different perspectives.

Timi is usually based in American Samoa but he visits Samoa to help his family with the plantation and other obligations.

The young man shared his thoughts with the Village Voice about life and the challenges in Samoa.

Timi embraces the beautiful life in Samoa because it is easy.

“I like it here so much, we have everything… I mean not everything but look at our surroundings; we can get food from the plantation,” he said.

“We have the sea for fishing... it is more than enough…

“The people are always friendly; when we run out of salt and sugar we can always turn to our neighbours for daily supplies like these.”

You can’t do this anywhere else.

“Compared to other countries, it’s so hard to ask them for small things like these.”

He accepts that the cost of living is pricey.

“But that’s because people are depending too much on imported goods

“Yes electricity and water is expensive but if you manage it wisely what is there to lose?”

Timi is a farmer and he enjoys his work.

He prefers being a farmer instead of being employed by someone else.

One of Timi’s life goals is to expand their family plantation.

His theory is to work hard during the good times so when the bad days come, he is prepared.

“I am a young man and I have many years ahead to plan what I want to do in the future

“However, at the moment I want to pursue first my dream of helping out my family with our plantation, expand it and maintain its goodness.”
