Mother calls for water supply to be consistent

Water has been on the news a lot this week.

Levaai Tuifiti of Faleasiu-uta knows that much but there is one little problem.

When the Village Voice team approached Levaai yesterday, the 64-year-old was just on her way back from Apia.

She’s a mother of nine children and four of them are working overseas.

“The water system in our village needs to be improved,” she said.

“It’s nice to see water making the news but when you have so many problems with it, what’s the point?”

Levaai said inconsistency is the biggest problem.

“We have water but the thing is, every week, there are always days that it shuts down and when it does, it takes about three days before it starts running again,” she said.

“Sometimes it’s more than three days.

“Whenever that happens, you see the people of this village from every side walking all over the place to find water or sometimes, head straight to use the village pool in the inner area because nobody can live without water.

“I mean, nobody wants to sleep without showering right?

For families like Levaai’s who are residing in the forestry area or far away from the inner village, getting water is always a challenge.

“And we have reported this issue a couple of times.

“We even informed those responsible for checking the meter system whenever they come around just so they can do something about it but unfortunately, all they said is that they are working on it.

“But it has been too long since it was like this.

“You know I’m always thinking and asking this question, people should have the same treatment when it comes to water. If others have excellent access to water, why can’t we have the same as well?

“That would be nice because at the moment it’s a bit unfair that the water system is not working out well for us and I know that other villages are experiencing this as well.

“If the government has increased the cost of living, the least they could do is let us have good water access so we don’t have to struggle every time this problem happens.”
