To help rekindle and maintain Samoan language, an International Samoa Short Story Writing competition was officially launched at the National University of Samoa.

The competition was launched by well-known Samoan author, Afemata Tunumafono Apelu Aiavao, Apulu Lance Polu and the Vice Chancellor of the National University of Samoa, Fui Le’apai Tu’ua Ilaoa Professor Asofou So’o yesterday.

The objective of the story writing competition is to encourage Samoans to tell and write stories in the Samoan language. It is also significant as it creates new resource material for the teaching of the Samoan language as elaborated by Apulu Lance Polu. The best stories will be published in a book and will be used to develop audio material for a popular radio series called Leulupani.

It is an open competition to all the Samoan around the world and will use social media and existing technology to promote it. The competition allows unpublished stories of 1,200 words on three pages A4. The deadline May 31, 2019.

The public is encouraged to write about every day issues affecting their lives. This competition was put together by the Talamua Media in Samoa with partnership: The National University of Samoa, Radio Samoa, Samoa Times & Samoa Multi Media Group, New Zealand; talamua.com, Samoa FM Radio, Apia, Samoa.
