The Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club will honour the memory of the late Tupua Fred Wetzell during an action-packed week it is planning to begin on 10 February 2017.

The week includes the 29th Vailima International Marist Sevens, a Rugby League Nines tournament, a touch rugby tournament, netball tournament and a boxing night.

But the highlight is set to be the Sevens tournament, during which the memory of the founder and President of Apia Concrete Products, Tupua, will be honoured. The businessman was a lifetime partner and an Honorary Member of the Club.

Marist has a proud sporting legacy.  But its first International Sports Week is another step up the ladder for the Club.

At S.S.A.B Togafufua yesterday, administrators of the Marist Sports Club unveiled their exciting plans for the sports week.

From February 10th -19th will be a jam packed week full of sports featuring some of the best talent Samoa has to offer and incorporating talent from overseas for an week-long event that no one will forget.

In cohesion with this year’s theme “Develop to Inspire and Inspire to Achieve,” the club is not only looking to showcase the best talent Samoa has to offer but also develop athletes both in the urban and rural areas.

President of the Club, Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio said it is all about developing sports in Samoa.

“There will be an added touch to Marist inspiration as part of the Club’s contribution to the development of sport in Samoa,” he said in a statement.

“This is part of the Club’s bigger purpose to aid our athletes, officials and administrators achieve the goals they have set.”

The sports week will kickoff with the Fight for Marist 2 at Gym 1 Tuanaimato.

The fight will feature the best Samoan boxers as well as boxers from throughout the Southern Hemisphere: Western Australia, Sydney, Australia, Pago Pago, and New Zealand.

The much anticipated fight of the night will be the professional bout between Jai Opetaia vs. John Parker.

There will be something for everyone throughout the week.

Not forgetting female athletes, the Club will host a variety of events that women can participate in such as netball tournament hosted by the recently launched Samoa Institute of Sports and the open mix touch rugby.

To wrap up with the week will be the grand finale, The Marist International Sevens.

The two day tournament will feature top international teams and will be heaven for any fan of rugby.
