Heavy rains are expected, says Meteorological Division

The Samoa Meteorological Division says heavy rains are expected this time of the year, as another heavy downpour in Apia yesterday threatened to unleash flooding in parts of the capital.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer yesterday, Samoa Meteorology Division’s Director, Tainau Mulipola Titimaea, said a convergence zone within the vicinity of Samoa and a low pressure system south of the islands—is leading to moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

“It is the wet season of the year and this South Pacific convergence zone that is moving over us is to be expected,” he said.

The Meteorological Division has asked residents living next to rivers and rainfall catchment areas to watch out for potential flooding and landslides. Vaiusu and other areas affected by flooding have been reported, added Tainau, which warrants the warning for flooding and landslides to remain in effect.

While there is a forecast of low degree showers as the convergence zone moves eastward from the island, Tainau said the country is not vulnerable to a tropical cyclone developing until early next year.

“We are more vulnerable to be expecting a tropical cyclone in the next second half of the season, perhaps between February and March,” he added.

Tainau said it is during those months (February and March) when Samoa experiences a dry season of low pressure, which are “ingredients” for the development of tropical cyclones.

Returning to the warning that his office relayed earlier to affected residents, he said they should take precaution and be on the alert for disaster.
