Family relies of husband’s catches for survival

If you don’t work hard you don’t get anything, says Ovani Vai of Faleula.

Mrs. Vai was spotted by the Village Voice team yesterday just leaving the place where she and her daughter were selling fish.

The mother of two said this is their way of survival.

“My husband is a fisherman and we sell his catch to get money,” she said.

“We sell my husband’s catch for $30 tala a bundle and if it’s more, than we get more than that.”

She is grateful for whatever they get.

“The money we get is more than enough to provide food for our family and help out with family obligations.”

Mrs. Vai says life becomes expensive when we don’t work hard.

“We can’t just sit back, relax and expect to have food on the table.

“My family relies so much on the sea and we have our own plantation in our backyard to support our family.

“Our people should use the land to grow crops and the sea to gather food and earn money,” she added.
