Go for the Gold

Think a minute…The Olympics is my favorite sports event, because it brings the world’s greatest athletes and nations together. It is inspiring to see what people can accomplish when they are disciplined and determined to reach their full potential.

Just when we think a human being cannot run or swim any faster, we top ourselves and set another world record.

But even though you and I may not be an Olympic gold medalist, we can still “go for the gold” in our own life. A successful man said: “Find a dream that makes you drool.” In other words, a dream that makes you so hungry for it that you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. So do you have a dream that makes you drool and daily drives you closer to your goal?

A young man did not know what he was going to do with his life. One day he was sitting in a park watching squirrels run and jump in the trees. Suddenly a squirrel jumped from one high tree to another.

It seemed to aim for a branch so far out of reach that the jump looked impossible. And sure enough, the squirrel missed! But it still landed safely on a branch just a few feet lower. Then it simply climbed up a little higher and reached the branch it really wanted.

An old man sitting near the young man said: “It’s funny, I’ve seen a lot of squirrels jump like that, especially when dogs are around and the squirrels cannot come down to the ground. A lot of them miss, but I have never seen one of them get hurt.

I guess they’ve just got to risk it if they don’t want to spend their whole life in just one tree.” The young man thought: “Do I have less courage to take a chance than a small squirrel?” At that moment he decided to take the risk he had been thinking about…and sure enough he landed in a position higher than he expected.

So “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you’ll land among the stars.” You will often end up better and higher than where you are now. But if you aim for nothing, you will hit it every time! On your gravestone will be the dates of your birth and death with a dash in-between.

So since “life is a dash” and goes by so fast, why not go for the gold? You only get one life. Don’t you want to make it the best one possible? Does the dream you are shooting for seem out of reach? With God’s help and wise guidance, take a leap, or at least a step, of faith. He will catch you if you fall. Just think a minute…
