Australia’s Acting High Commissioner, Amanda Jewell, has assured Samoa of her country’s continuous support for the scholarship programme, providing Samoans with opportunities to gain higher qualifications.

Ms. Jewell offered the assurance at Le Papaigalagala on Wednesday where the Government was joined by Australia and New Zealand to congratulate winners of scholarships to different countries, as they are about to begin their studies.

The ceremony was presided over by the Prime Minister and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi. 

The Acting New Zealand High Commissioner, Matt Howell, was also present and spoke about New Zealand’s commitment to the programme.

Ms. Jewell congratulated the scholarship winners.

 “I am pleased that we are able to offer our continuous support to your educational journey as the future leaders of Samoa,” she said, adding that Australia’s purpose is to assist Samoans attain a good education which leads to better job opportunities.

This will enable them to contribute to their families, villages and the future of Samoa.

“I know that you have all worked hard for these scholarships, but this is only the beginning of what lies ahead in your academic journey,” she said. 

“For some of you, this will be your first time away from family and travelling overseas. Continue to ask questions and always seek support. As you know, we have a solid support network through the scholarships programme to ensure you succeed.”

Australia has committed A$4.5 million to the Australia Awards programme in Samoa.

The Acting High Commissioner acknowledged the Samoan Government for leading the Tripartite Scholarship arrangement as a sign of the strong relationship and partnership between Samoa, Australia and New Zealand.

She also spoke about the importance of scholars developing people to people links.

 “These relationships will serve you well throughout your career – providing you with a network of colleagues and mentors, which cuts across borders to support you in all your endeavours both personal and professional,” she said.
