Water cooler smiles at Peace Chapel

Students of Peace Chapel Christian School in Vaimea have all the more reason to smile with the installation of two modern water cooler systems in their school.

School Principal, Lisa Lameta, said the new water filtration systems are major improvements from the original polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) pipe fountain that students drank off, which was unhygienic.

“We had a P.V.C. pipe fountain at the back of the school. When they turned it on, the water just comes out of all the holes, and there was a lot of water wasted, it wasn’t hygienic as well,” Ms. Lameta said.

She took on the Principal role this year, and it has always been her aim to provide a more suitable drinking water system for the 290 students enrolled in the school.

Ms. Lameta said she was approached by the Pure Pacific Water team after a parent had anonymously volunteered to sponsor one of the water cooler systems.

“Someone had a business and they were getting some for the business and they really wanted us to have one here,” she said.

“I decided with the number of students we have, one is not going to be enough. So at the moment, the school is paying for the other one.” Ms. Lameta told the Samoa Observer that Pure Pacific Water has a really good discount for schools with a charge of $57.50 a month, which includes six monthly checks on the systems for maintenance purposes.

“It’s been really good to know the students are having clean, cold water. If they use the water in the coolers all at once, then it just take 10-15 minutes for the water to get cold again. The water comes straight out of the P.V.C. pipe and the water cooler just filters it.

“The kids have really enjoyed it, they’re drinking more water and the parents are really blessed that the school is providing something for their kids. We did have water that we could buy at the canteen before, but this is a big help for the students.”

Ms. Lameta said the school staff encourages students to bring their water bottles every day to fill instead of using plastic cups over again.

“We encourage the students to bring bottles rather than using cups that will be thrown away or they are not using the same cup that does happen out there,” she said.

“It’s also helping the environment by people not throwing plastic cups and bottles all the time. They can just reuse them.”

It’s just been more than a week since the installation and the school has enjoyed the new water cooler systems. Ms. Lameta said the parent who sponsored one water cooling system wanted to remain anonymous.

“We are a private school and the kids do pay fees, so if we can give something back to families that’ll be really good.

There are 11 teaching staff and five learning support staff for the Year 1 – Year 8 students.

Ms. Lameta acknowledged the parent who kindly donated the water cooling system for the school, and is encouraging schools still using P.V.C. pipes to consider the new invention in Samoa for the sake of the students.
