It all began when reporters from the Samoa Observer interviewed 20 year old Nu’u Aufale from Falefa on Monday.

His story appeared in the pages of the Village Voice section where people living outside Apia tell of their lives in the villages.

While talking to him, the reporters were struck by his sincere wish to get a job to help his family. 

“When you don’t know where your next meal is coming from or when you’re struggling to help your family, the answer is simple - 'look for a job'," he had said firmly. 

He spoke of how he had left school when in Year 12 to get a job but four years later, he found things were not so simple. 

In the meantime, he helped his parents around the house and sold the family’s taro and bananas in the village.

But he always hoped that he would get a job as a solution to his family’s situation and he never gave up on himself.

“I may not have had the best education,” he said, “but I’m a worthy person for any job offered.” 

Nu’u went on to say that all he hoped for, was to get hired soon. 

His obvious sincerity in the story, struck a chord with the General Manager of Taumeasina Island Resort, Mr Nathan Bucknall has offered the young man a job.

 “I read Village Voice all the time, and what comes through is that life is hard." 

Mostly the part where young people are trying to prove themselves that they are worthy of any chances, and this is the same case with Nu’u. 

“I mean if I can help anybody else, I’d be willing to help them,” 

 “I told myself, why not give him a try?"

“I mean offer him a job and let him prove to us that he really needs the chance and he wants the money to help his family." 

“We have 170 local staff members working with us and it’s a pleasure to have Nu’u join our team,” Mr Bucknall said. 

“We don’t look for any applicants particularly, but like I told you before, I want to help offer jobs to those who really need them." 

“Just seeing the devastation, knowing that somebody’s out there needing help, I figured we could do something to help him,” he said, 

“Clean up, just try and get him back on his feet.”

“So for Nu’u I’m happy I can see the desire in him to work."

He will be starting work today, the 10th of May in housekeeping and we’ll see what he can do. 

“As long as he works hard, comes to work right on time, does not drink or cause any problems or think of taking anything from our guests of the Resort, he will be fine and will stay with us.” 

Nu’u was overwhelmed and thankful for the opportunity given. 

“It’s remarkable how this opportunity has changed my view on things,” he said.

“Just when I thought I had completely failed because I had no way of getting a job, a stranger named Mr Nathan Bucknall has come forward."

“God must have sent these awesome people into my path to show me goodness exists.”

In tears he added, “On behalf of my family, I would like to thank the amazing people who have shown love to me and helped me find a job.” 

“Thank you very much for the opportunity and I promise you, Mr Nathan Bucknall, you won’t regret your decision to hire me."
