Govt. urged to fix the road please

A taxi driver has issued a heartfelt plea to the government – particularly the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure.

Pule Lesa, 35-year-old from Lotopa says the government should show mercy on the public by fixing the roads.

A taxi driver at the Lotopa Taxi Service, Pule says the poor conditions of the roads have made his job – and that of a lot of people – harder.

“We been asking the government how many times to fix our road, but as of now nothing has been done,” he said.

“Everyday something goes wrong with our cars because of the potholes. The tyres need to be replaced and all the other parts are affected.”

Pule lives with his aunty at Lotopa.

“I make $60 to $70tala a day,” he said.

“But when it comes to rainy days like this, I hardly go out because of the road. It’s not just the potholes; it’s the flooding and the long queues too.

“The government should do something about this, before it’s too late.”

Pule told the Village Voice the money he makes doesn’t cover the expenses of a damaged vehicle.

“The cost of living is too high and the cost for one tire is very expensive,” he said. “Add that on top of the slow days, life becomes very hard. This is why we need help from the government.”

Pule said he works hard for his family.

“My priority is my family. I don’t have a wife and kids but I contribute to everything in my family.”

Pule also urged the government to consider increasing taxi fares.

“Some of our passengers hate us because of the fares but we do tell them the cost of the petrol is expensive. The government hasn’t raised the fares for a while now. I think the last raise was 2004.”
