Hard work key to survival

We need to work more rather than sit and complain.

Such is the belief of 26-year-old Tusi Tapuai, from the village of Samu’a in Manono.

Mr. Tapuai is the eldest of five siblings and he provides food for his family.

His younger siblings are still in school, with one sister living abroad.

Mr. Tapuai says life is tough for his family because no one worked.

“My sister living abroad sometimes sends my parents money, but we mostly rely on our plantation for survival and financial assistance.”

“My plantation assists us with food and money, because I sell some of my crops just down the road when I have enough,” Mr. Tapuai told the Village Voice team yesterday.

He also makes use of the sea.

“I only go fishing twice a week at night.”

“My parents are getting old and they sometimes crave for fish and that is why I always go fishing.”

“Life is really hard here in Samoa and we just have to work hard and support our families.”

“We have land to work and that’s for us youths to use for our parents.”

Mr. Tapuai adds he wishes to find a job, but because no one’s there to look after his family, he has to work his plantation.
