Gloria overcomes heartbreak

Samoa needs doctors.

For 17- year old Gloria Valeli, she has every intention of becoming one if all goes well with her education.

And she is on the right path. Yesterday, she was named the 2016 Dux of Faleata College during their prize giving at the L.D.S Hall, Pesega.

Gloria is the daughter of Valeli and the late Tofaga Lemalie of Vaitele Uta.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Gloria said becoming a doctor is a dream she has had for a long time now. But she was convinced this is what she wanted when her mother passed away.

“The most challenging part of my journey was when my mother passed away in the middle of this year,” she said.

“I felt hopeless, I felt like life had no more meaning when she left me.

“It was so hard, I lost focus in school, I didn’t want to do anything more because my mother is so important to me.

“Even today I miss her more than anything in this world. She would have been jumping up and down here at our graduation.

“She was my inspiration and she taught me so much that I need it to know about life.”

But even though she lost her mother, she still has her father to thank.

“Today I dedicate all of this to my mother but most especially to my father,” she said. “He is a strong man, and I know he misses her more than us but he never once gave up on us.

“He is my guardian and I know I wouldn’t be able to make it this far if it wasn’t for him. He encourages me to aim for the stars so thank you dad.”

As for her dream of becoming a doctor, she said it’s something her mother had always wanted and she wants to make sure she fulfils this for her.

“It is both me and my mother’s dream to become a doctor,” she said.

“So the next step is to wait for my result if I’ve made it to N.U.S and then from there on I will work extra hard to achieve my goal.”
