Vaimoso Village Council sets the record straight

A rock throwing incident last Saturday evening that brought traffic to a halt on the Vaimoso road only involved men from the village.

The Vaimoso Village Council Committee Chairman, Aulavemai Asiata Tafito, said the incident that occurred after 8pm last Saturday only involved men from his village, not Alamagoto.

This was also confirmed by Alamagoto’s Village Mayor, Lefau Waikaremoana So’onalole, who told the Samoa Observer that no one from their village was involved.

According to Aulavemai, the preliminary reports by the police that the clash was between men from Alamagoto and Vaimoso were not true.

“It does not sound right that men from another village come in our village and start a fight,” he said.

“It does not sit well with us. This is an insult. What happened was between men in our village and they have been dealt with.”

Two families were involved.

“They have been penalised by the village Council and that is that... but again no one from another village was involved,” he said.

Other village chiefs, who were also present in the meeting yesterday with Samoa Observer, expressed similar sentiments and said they were “insulted” by reports that men from another village went to Vaimoso to pick a fight.

“This is an insult to the village and that is why we want to make it clear the incident occurred in the village Saturday night were men from our village.

“The police arrived and we told them to please let the council deal with it and they respected our wishes,” added Aulavemai, who said the Police did not get involved because no one was injured and no properties were damaged.

Aulavemai also apologised to the public for the inconvenience that the confrontation caused on Saturday night.

“The Police arrived and they directed traffic while the main highway was closed temporarily and that was for safety reasons. We apologise for what has occurred,” he said.
