NO PROBLEM
by Konai Helu Thaman
we wait in the dark
hoping the new moon
will give us sight
we listen in the night
for the spirit bird’s song
to herald a new day
but our first glimpse of dawn
only touches
the sand
that blocks our vision
of you
like a young girl picking
flowers for her friend’s lover
we are left
only with the fragrance
of langakali and mohokoi
now your resting place
the new moon is slanting
the birds have gone to sleep
the beach is empty
the lagoon has no fish
and the eyes have been plucked
from the prisoner
but here at USP
we can still see
you have not left us
(Allan)
you are still here
